Dogfish Head Craft Brewery’s Punkin Ale is back once again! This ale first released in 1995, and is now one of the best-selling pumpkin beers in the United States. The Punkin Ale is at a 7% ABV, full-bodied brown ale, and is now available on taps and shelves in a store near you. This beer is made with real pumpkin, brown sugar, allspice, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

“We’ve been brewing Punkin Ale for over two decades, since long before there was a whole category of pumpkin beer, and have seen sales grow each and every year,” said Sam Calagione, CEO and founder of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. “I think it’s because the complexity and authenticity of the recipe has remained world-class since we first brewed it, as it’s not made with pumpkin flavoring or concentrates – we use fresh, all-natural culinary ingredients, and that makes a big difference.”

The story behind of the Punkin Ale began when it won first place in a baking contest in 1994 at the World Championship Punkin Chuckin, in this coastal Delware fall event that took place on and off between 1986-216. People would travel from around the world to see those who would hurl a pumpkin the furthest. Calagione decided twenty-three years ago to enter his first-ever batch of Punkin Ale into the competition with the same real ingredients. He took home best in show for the homebrew, beating out homemade pies, cookies, and cakes! The name was inspired by the Punkin Chunkin competition. To this day, this is Dogfish Head’s best-selling seasonal beer annually.

“Every fall, a week or so after Halloween, my wife Mariah and I will pop open a couple Punkin Ales and toast to the good karma that beer’s story has brought us,” said Calagione.

The artwork behind the creative beer logo was from longtime friend and highly acclaimed designer, Marq Spusta, a California based artist, known for his distinct illustrative style. The Spusta’s version of the label features a mystically haunted, Halloween forest with spooky characters.
